If you live in Victoria and experience a power outage, first and foremost, it’s important to remain calm. In order to get answers as to why and for how long, you’ll need to reach out to your Transmission and Distribution Service Provider (TDSP). The city of Victoria, Texas is the largest city in the central coastal region, with a correspondingly large impact on its culture and commerce. In the early 20th century, the city developed from a rural ranching community into a thriving regional trade hub, a role it still fulfills today as a crossroads between four of Texas' major metropolitan centers.

The economy of Victoria is diverse, with manufacturing, oil, petrochemicals, agribusiness, tourism, and recreation. The city is accessible by rail, commercial air, and three different highways: U.S. Highways 59, 77, and 87. Victoria is only a two-hour drive from San Antonio, Houston, Corpus Christi, and Austin. Points of interest abound in Victoria thanks to its long and eventful history, from its settlement in 1824 up to today.

The city's original name was Guadalupe Victoria, in honor of the first president of the republic of Mexico. This first version of Victoria was founded by Martin De Leon, a Mexican empresario (colonial land contractor). Guadalupe Victoria had a mostly Mexican population through its early period, but during the Texas Revolution it did donate arms and provisions to Texans fighting against Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. This led to its occupation by the Mexican army until they were defeated by the Texans at the Battle of San Jacinto. The city was then taken over by and resettled by the Texans, re-named as Victoria, and incorporated in 1830 under the Republic of Texas.

The city's first mayor and its board of aldermen laid the foundation of Victoria's future as a trade city by making the Guadalupe River navigable and establishing a ferry operation. Thirty years later the San Antonio and Mexican Gulf Railroad arrived and, with a brief pause in operations due to damage from the Civil War, brought increased commerce to the city. By the time of World War II, Victoria had a thoroughly urban and cosmopolitan atmosphere with a population of up Anglos, Italians, Jews, Mexicans, and Germans.

Post-World War II Victoria experienced considerable population growth, buoyed by its historically strong economy. It became a regional center for arts, entertainment, education, and medicine, leading to its eventual designation in 1980 as a standard metropolitan statistical area. In 1990, the population was 55,076; the 2019 estimate is 66,916. Victoria residents of Hispanic descent make up 53%, and African Americans 7%, of the overall population. Thanks to the 2002 deregulation of the Texas energy market, Victoria electricity plans cost markedly less than the national average and residents are free to choose from among the different Victoria electricity providers.

Victoria residents today can explore their past through the city's Trail Through Time interactive history exhibit, a self-guided tour across the city to locations of historical significance, or the Old Victoria Driving Tour. A memento of Victoria's earliest days lies its historic downtown: De Leon Plaza, originally created by Martin De Leon as the Pla-za de la Constitucion. Today, the plaza holds several historical monuments, a band stand, and benches, all under the shade of mature oak trees. It's a local favorite for festivals and special events.
