If you live in Katy and experience a power outage, first and foremost, it’s important to remain calm. In order to get answers as to why and for how long, you’ll need to reach out to your Transmission and Distribution Service Provider (TDSP). Located 29 miles west of downtown Houston is the City of Katy. Originally a tiny settlement built near a creek, Katy is now part of the Greater Katy Area within the Greater Houston Metropolis. Many of its small-town charms persist despite the heavy urbanization of its surroundings. Katy is at the tripoint of three counties: Harris, Fort Bend, and Waller. Fort Bend County is notable for its ethnic diversity, with almost equal numbers of Asians, Latinos, blacks, and whites. The Katy Independent School District is rated A by the Texas Education Agency, with high levels of student achievement.

Many Katy residents work in nearby Houston or the Houston Energy Corridor, which is only a few miles to the east on Highway 10. Several major corporations are headquartered in Katy or the Energy Corridor, including BP America and Igloo Corporation. In 2017 Amazon constructed a 1-million-square-foot fulfillment center in Katy to service the Greater Houston area. The land the city now rests on was originally open prairie with a creek running through it, mainly used by hunters and fur trappers. In 1845 James Crawford received a land grant to create a settlement, but thanks to its heavy clay soils and humid, hot summers, the place that was to become Katy didn't attract many settlers.

That changed in 1983 with the arrival of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, also known as the MKT or simply the K-T. By 1898 the nascent community had its own rail depot and post office and named itself after the railroad that had brought to life: Katy. Katy residents built a strong economy based on rice farming and livestock ranching. A rich liquid hydrocarbon well drilled in Katy in 1934 paid dividends during World War II, when its location close to Houston made it an important resource in the war effort.

In 1966 Interstate 10 was opened and Houston began to expand westward, creating major growth in Katy. Nowadays the city's estimated population is 21,729, although approximately 340,000 people live in the Greater Katy Area, which corresponds to the boundaries of the Katy Independent School District. In 2002, the deregulation of the Texas energy market allowed Katy residents greater freedom in choosing electricity plans.

The city itself is divided into four quadrants by two major highways: Grand Parkway 99 runs north to south, while Interstate 10-the widest freeway in the world with 30 lanes-runs east to west. Old Katy contains the Katy Heritage Museum and the city's downtown, plus the beautiful Katy Park and Mason Creek wetland habitat and recreational area. North Katy is mostly residential, with convenient proximity to the Energy Corridor. Southeast Katy contains several older neighborhoods and George Bush Park, a large urban park with equestrian, bike, and walking paths. Finally, Southwest Katy is home to many of the city's newest residential developments as well as the famous Katy Mills Mall, which boasts over 1.3 million square feet of air-conditioned retail space.
